InSource, Cella Consulting, and The BOSS Group have partnered to present the 2012 In-House Creative Service Industry Report, benchmarking internal creative departments within corporations and other organizations throughout the U.S. and beyond. The report is based on findings of a January 2012 survey of more than 360 marketing, design and communications team leaders nationwide and globally, and gives an insider’s view into the current state of in-house creative. With a large percentage of recent graduates looking to entering this niche of the labor market, the report points to positive hiring and retention trends, an increase in project volume and an increase in plans to expand department offerings to include services such as mobile design.

The pool of survey respondents represents Fortune 500 companies, middle market and other large companies across multiple industries to include retail, government contracting, financial services, pharmaceuticals, higher education, consumer packaged goods and services. The company size, measured by revenue, varied from more than a billion annually to not-for-profit organizations. Findings provide insight on attrition rates, hiring trends, structural efficiencies, time-tracking systems, chargeback systems, project volume and more.

Report Key Highlights

  • 36% of teams increased their size between 2010 and 2011. Taking into account both full-time and contingent staff, 62% of creative leaders indicated their team was appropriately staffed, a dramatic improvement of 18 percentage points over last year; 50% of respondents indicated that their staff size remained flat while only 15% decreased their staff size.
  • More than 90% of creative leaders are able to bring in temporary staff during periods of peak demand.
  • 50% of leaders indicated that 100% of their teams are full-time employees. 24% indicated that 90% of their teams are full-time employees.
  • Attrition remained a non-issue for the respondents in 2011. 79% had less than 10% attrition rate.
