I have found Guidance from the “Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz:

1. Be Impeccable With Your Word: Speak with Integrity. Say only what you mean.

2.Don’t Take Anything Personally: Nothing others do is because of you.

3.Don’t Make Assumptions: Find the courage to ask questions and express what you want.

4. Always Do Your Best: Under any circumstance simply do your best and you will avoid self- judgment and regret

Hellman’s (the mayonaisse) Law: Keep cool, but do not freeze.

And:

“Don’t make owl soup.”

(this supposedly was the entire content for the recipe titled ‘Owl Soup’ from a recipe book about Eskimo cooking. It helps to realize that many owls include skunks as a main staple of their diet.)

I have naturally turned to my boss, peers, and HR for advice on managing my team at work. There are few industry resources I turn to for business advice, but those are websites, books, and trade resources mostly.

The best career advice I ever got was from my dad when I was 17. He gave me two pearls of wisdom that I’m sure many dads have given in one way or another:

1. Slow and steady wins every time.

2. Do what you love, and the money will follow.

I didn’t understand the first one until I was in my late 30′s, when the second one came true.
