I have found Guidance from the "Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz:

1. Be Impeccable With Your Word: Speak with Integrity. Say only what you mean.

2.Don't Take Anything Personally: Nothing others do is because of you.

3.Don't Make Assumptions: Find the courage to ask questions and express what you want.

4. Always Do Your Best: Under any circumstance simply do your best and you will avoid self- judgment and regret

My boss once said, "Don't let your weaknesses get in the way of your success." Sounds simple enough, but somehow it stuck with me at all the right times.

Hellman's (the mayonaisse) Law: Keep cool, but do not freeze.

And:

"Don't make owl soup."

(this supposedly was the entire content for the recipe titled 'Owl Soup' from a recipe book about Eskimo cooking. It helps to realize that many owls include skunks as a main staple of their diet.)

I have naturally turned to my boss, peers, and HR for advice on managing my team at work. There are few industry resources I turn to for business advice, but those are websites, books, and trade resources mostly.

The best career advice I ever got was from my dad when I was 17. He gave me two pearls of wisdom that I'm sure many dads have given in one way or another:

1. Slow and steady wins every time.

2. Do what you love, and the money will follow.

I didn't understand the first one until I was in my late 30's, when the second one came true.
