Don’t Let In-House Familiarity Keep You From Really Listening

You can predict what product manager Eric will say before he opens his mouth. You’ve heard Cynthia in marketing express her branding theories maybe two million times. And if the CEO drones on about synergies and optics once more, you’ll have to strangle him with his silk tie.

Yes, anybody who doesn’t believe familiarity breeds contempt should hang around the same company and hear the same people repeat the same opinions over and over. It’s enough to make highly creative folks plug in their earbuds to shut off the chatter.

Big mistake.

After all, active listening is the closest we’ll ever get to mind reading. Perking up our ears is the easiest way to uncover the likes and dislikes, wants and needs of our bosses and internal clients.
